Fit To ScreenAnime wallpaper, measured against the screen it is going on

Finding the picture is the easy part

Two things decide whether a wallpaper works: whether it is yours to use, and whether it is the right shape and size for the screen you are putting it on.

Match the widths and a 16:9 picture is taller than a 21:9 screen, so 74% of its height survives and the rest is thrown away. Every page here is a version of this measurement.

  • FILE, the pixels you have
  • SCREEN, what the display asks for
  • LOST, what gets discarded

Is it mine to use?

Free to download and free to use are not the same thing. A file a server will hand you may still belong to a studio, a publisher or the artist who drew it, and a licence that forbids derivatives forbids the crop you were about to make.

There are four kinds of picture you can genuinely use: work a rights holder has released, work under a stated open licence, work you licensed from its artist, and work you made yourself. Everything else is somebody else's.

Will it fit?

A screen wants one pair of numbers and one shape. Get the pair wrong and the picture is stretched or soft; get the shape wrong and the parts you cared about are outside the frame before you ever see them.

Phones are taller than any artwork is composed in, ultrawides are wider, and a Retina panel quietly asks for twice the pixels its own menus report. Each of those has a page.

Find your screen

Every measurement on this site starts from the width of the panel in front of you. Read across, then follow the section that matches what you are setting it on.

Bar length is the pixel WIDTH. Two panels on this scale share a width and differ entirely in height, which is why width alone never answers the question.
