A 4K file on a 5K iMac is still an upscale

WHY 4K IS NOT ENOUGH HERE. On a 5K panel a 4K file does not fill the screen, so the system enlarges it by a third. 4K is the number people ask for and it is the smaller shape.

This is the point where the Mac answer parts company with the PC answer. On Windows, 4K is usually the ceiling and a 4K wallpaper is as good as the screen can show. On a Mac, 4K is a middle number: it comfortably exceeds every MacBook Air, it is roughly right for the MacBook Pro, and it falls short of the desktops. Asking for a 4K anime wallpaper for a Mac is therefore asking for a resolution that may already be too small, and the honest reply is a bigger file rather than a better filter.

Where 4K covers a Mac panel and where it does not

4K covers the laptops and falls short of the desktops, and the table below shows the margin in each case. Compare the file at 3840 x 2160 against the panel's native pixels, not against the size macOS reports, because a Retina Mac reports half its pixel width in points and a file built to the reported number arrives at half resolution.

The MacBook Pro 16 in row is the one people miss. The panel is 3456 x 2234 and a 4K file is only 2160 pixels tall, so macOS has to stretch it a little to cover the height even though the file is wider than the screen. It is a small upscale and it is still an upscale.

Two numbers are both called 4K

4K names two different resolutions, and only one of them belongs on a desktop. A monitor sold as 4K is almost always 4K UHD at 3840 x 2160, an aspect ratio of 16:9. DCI 4K at 4096 x 2160 is the cinema standard, slightly wider, and a file at that size on a 16:9 screen loses a strip from each side under Fill.

Be exact about what 4K buys you: 3840 x 2160 is four times the pixel count of 1920 x 1080, not twice, because both axes doubled. Above it sits 5K at 5120 x 2880 and 8K UHD at 7680 x 4320, which is rare outside televisions.

What an upscale does to anime line art

An upscale invents pixels that were never captured, and anime artwork is the worst possible subject for it. A photograph carries grain and fine texture that mask interpolation. Cel-style art carries the opposite: hard black outlines, large flat fills, and long clean diagonals. Stretch that 1.33 times to reach 5120 x 2880 from 3840 x 2160 and the outlines soften while the flat areas start to show steps at the edges of the color regions.

Compression makes it worse in the same places. Banding is the visible stepping in a smooth gradient, caused by 8-bit color having only 256 levels per channel. Save an upscaled anime wallpaper as a heavily compressed JPEG and you get both defects at once. PNG avoids banding at the cost of size, and AVIF supports 10-bit color, which largely removes it.

WHAT UPSCALING CANNOT DO

No upscaler recovers detail that was never in the file. Modern ones guess convincingly on photographs and badly on line art, where a wrong guess lands directly on an outline. A file that starts at 5120 x 2880 beats a 3840 x 2160 file processed by anything.

Black and dark wallpapers at 4K on a Mac

A black 4K wallpaper on a Mac saves no power, because Mac displays are backlit LCD panels, including the mini-LED panels in the MacBook Pro, and the backlight is on regardless of what the picture shows. The power argument for true black belongs to OLED, where a subpixel showing pure black is switched off, and that applies to phones rather than to any current Mac.

Dark wallpapers do have two real advantages on a Mac: they hide an upscale better than bright ones, and they leave menu bar text and desktop icons legible. They carry one specific risk. A dark image is mostly gradient, and gradient is exactly what bands, so a near-black background at 5120 x 2880 saved as a small JPEG will show rings that were not in the original. Save dark wallpapers as PNG or as 10-bit AVIF.

The size to ask for instead of 4K

Ask for the panel's native pixels, and if you want one file to serve a whole desk, ask for 5120 x 2880, which covers every Apple display listed above with room to spare. Downscaling discards pixels cleanly, so an oversized file costs storage and nothing else.

  • Build to 5120 x 2880 for a Studio Display 27 in or a 27 in iMac.
  • Build to 4480 x 2520 for an iMac 24 in.
  • Build to 3456 x 2234 for a MacBook Pro 16 in, or reuse the 5K file.
  • Keep 3840 x 2160 for external 4K monitors, where it is exactly right.

Two screens need one wide file only on Windows, which spans a single picture across displays: two 2560 x 1440 panels there need 5120 x 1440. macOS sets wallpaper per display and does not span, so on a Mac each screen takes its own correctly sized file. The same picture is a different file on every device for exactly this reason.

Where a genuinely 5K anime wallpaper comes from

A file at 5120 x 2880 has to be made at that size by somebody, and that is where the licensing question arrives. Anime artwork is copyrighted, and a high resolution copy of a frame is still the rights holder's work no matter what size it is. Four kinds of image are free to use: work a rights holder released with stated terms, work under an open license, work licensed from the artist, and work you made yourself. Studio Ghibli published a large set of stills on ghibli.jp from September 2020, free to use within the bounds of common sense, which is a real example of the first kind.

Read the license before you resize, because a Creative Commons ND license forbids derivatives and scaling a picture to 5120 x 2880 is a derivative. Making the file yourself, at the exact pixel size of your panel, settles the resolution question and the rights question together. This site holds no image files. Motion is a separate matter again: a live wallpaper is a video your device never stops decoding, and Wallpaper Engine is a Steam program that plays those on Windows only.
