That is the whole procedure on a stock launcher. The two harder questions are the ones people actually arrive with: why the wallpaper keeps changing on its own, and why the phone sometimes refuses to change it at all.
Setting a wallpaper from the launcher or the gallery
To set a wallpaper from either starting point, follow the route that matches where the picture already is.
- Press and hold an empty area of the home screen, then tap Wallpaper or Wallpaper and style.
- Choose a source, either the phone's own collection or your gallery.
- Position and scale the crop, since the frame you set here is what the launcher keeps.
- Select the target: home screen, lock screen, or both.
- Confirm, then check the result against your app icons before deciding it worked.
Starting from a picture instead: open it in the gallery, choose Set as wallpaper from the overflow menu, and complete the same crop and target steps. Vendor software labels these controls differently, but the sequence does not change.
Home screen, lock screen, or both
Android treats the home screen and the lock screen as two targets for one action, which is why the picker asks before it applies anything. Choosing both puts one file in two places, and having two different pictures means running the process twice.

Compose for the lock screen if you only intend to crop once, since it is the target with fixed furniture at top and bottom.
Why the wallpaper changes by itself
A wallpaper that changes by itself is a setting somewhere, not a fault and not a sign of anything wrong with the phone. Five sources account for nearly all of it, and each has its own switch.

The carousel is the commonest culprit and the least obvious, because it is often enabled during setup and lives in the lock screen settings rather than the wallpaper settings. It also never touches the home screen, which is why people report the problem as happening only when the phone is locked.
Turning the automatic change off
To stop the wallpaper changing by itself, work through the sources in order of likelihood rather than resetting the phone.
- Open the lock screen settings and turn off any carousel, Glance or dynamic lock screen option.
- Reopen the wallpaper picker and check whether the current selection is a category rather than one image.
- Review installed apps for a changer and remove it, since disabling it usually leaves the schedule.
- Reapply the default theme, if a theme is managing the wallpaper as part of a set.
- Set your own image again explicitly, to both targets, so nothing is left holding the slot.
Reboot afterward and give it a day, because a job that fires once every twenty four hours will look fixed all evening whether you found it or not.
Making it change on purpose
To make an Android wallpaper change automatically, use the daily option in the wallpaper picker if your phone has one, or install a changer app and point it at a folder of your own images. Both do the same thing: a scheduled job wakes, picks the next file and sets it. Prefer the version built into the phone, since it needs no extra permissions and no extra running service.
WHAT AUTOMATIC CHANGING COSTS
A changer app keeps a service alive so it can fire on schedule, a small continuous cost. A live wallpaper is different in kind: it is a video your device never stops decoding while the home screen is visible, and it draws nothing when the display is off or an app is in front of it.
Feeding a changer from a folder you control also settles the licensing question a catalog app leaves open, since a rotating supply of anime images from a service is a rotating supply of somebody's copyrighted drawings. Images you made, images under an open license, and images a rights holder released with stated terms are the ones that belong in that folder.
When Android will not let you change the wallpaper
A phone that refuses to change the wallpaper is almost always being stopped by one of six things, and the fix is identifying which.
- A device policy on a work profile or a managed phone, which locks the wallpaper deliberately.
- An applied theme that owns the slot, so a change reverts the moment it is made.
- A live wallpaper still holding the slot, which has to be replaced with a still image.
- A denied media permission, leaving the picker nothing to show from your gallery.
- A third party launcher that is not set as the default, so its control applies to nothing.
- Low free storage, since the system writes a cropped copy of the file and needs room for it.
Where the picture applies and then reverts, the cause is a theme or a changer overwriting it. Where the picker is empty or grayed out, the cause is a permission or a policy.
Sizing the replacement so it does not come back cropped
Size the file to the panel before you set it, because Android crops to fill and will not ask twice. The mainstream Android resolution is 1080 x 2400, flagships run 1440 x 3120, and the aspect ratios of 20:9 and 19.5:9 are taller than any artwork is composed in. Android also asks for a file wider than the screen so the wallpaper can scroll between home screens, conventionally about twice the screen width where the launcher supports parallax, and many launchers no longer scroll.
Desktop numbers do not transfer. 4K is 3840 x 2160, a landscape 16:9 resolution, and filling a phone with it means scaling a shape roughly 3.85 times too wide in proportion, so most of the picture goes off frame. The same picture is a different file on every device you own, and Wallpaper Engine, the Steam program that plays animated wallpapers on Windows, has a separately sold Android companion that does not change that arithmetic.
