photographMac wallpapers are set one per display in the Wallpaper pane of System Settings, and macOS scales every picture to fill the screen, cropping whichever axis is proportionally longer unless you pick Fit To Screen or Stretch instead.

That single default explains most of what people complain about: the sides of a wide picture go missing on a laptop, the top and bottom of a tall one go missing on a monitor, and nobody was asked. The second failure is resolution, because a Retina Mac reports one set of numbers and has twice as many pixels. The same picture is a different file on every device you own, and a Mac asks for a different file again from the phone in your pocket.
What Fill, Fit To Screen and Stretch each do to the picture
Fill Screen, Fit To Screen and Stretch to Fill Screen are three different answers to the same problem, which is that your file and your panel almost never have the same shape. macOS applies one of them to every desktop picture, and the one it applies by default is Fill.

The arithmetic is worth doing once. A 1920 x 1080 file is 16:9, which is 1.778 wide for every 1 tall. A MacBook Air 13 in panel is 2560 x 1664, which is closer to 16:10. Fill scales the file until it covers the taller shape, and the extra width goes off both edges. Nothing is broken. The setting did exactly what it says.
Why a Mac wallpaper looks soft at the size the menus report
A Mac wallpaper looks soft because macOS reports points and the panel has pixels, and on a Retina display there are two pixels per point in each direction. A MacBook Air 13 in reports 1280 x 832 and its panel is 2560 x 1664. Build the file to the reported number and it arrives at half resolution, gets upscaled to fill the panel, and looks exactly as blurry as you would expect a half-size image to look. Every screen wants one pair of numbers, and on a Mac the pair you want is the native pixel pair, not the one in the Displays settings.
This is the single commonest cause of a disappointing Mac wallpaper, and it is worse for anime art than for photography. Flat cel color and hard black line art make an upscale obvious, because there is no grain or noise to hide the softness in.
Dynamic wallpapers, aerials, and what live means on a Mac
Dynamic wallpapers on a Mac are not video. A Dynamic Desktop is one file holding several versions of the same scene, and macOS switches between them as the day goes on, using your time zone. Nothing moves. The aerial screen savers on Apple silicon Macs are the closest thing to motion the system offers by itself: the slow drone footage plays as a screen saver and can settle into the desktop picture when you wake the machine.
Beyond that, motion on a Mac desktop needs third party software, and the best known program does not run there. Wallpaper Engine is a Steam program that plays animated wallpapers, and it is Windows only: there is no macOS build and none has been announced. It is also paid software and has never had a free tier. Two open source alternatives exist, Lively Wallpaper on Windows and ScreenPlay, which is cross platform. A live wallpaper is a video your device never stops decoding while it is visible, which is why the question of whether to run one is really a question about power and heat.
Setting the desktop picture, and the slot macOS does not have
To set a desktop picture, open System Settings, choose Wallpaper, pick a display if you have more than one, and add your own file. The lock screen question has a different answer on a Mac from the one it has on a phone: iOS gives you two separate wallpaper slots, Lock Screen and Home Screen, and they can hold two different images. The Mac Wallpaper pane sets one picture per display, and there is no second picker beside it for a different lock screen image. Screen Saver is its own pane, and on Apple silicon the aerial you choose there can carry into the desktop, which is the only place the two settings meet.
WHAT MACOS DOES NOT DO
macOS does not span one wallpaper across two displays. Each display gets its own picture, chosen separately. Windows is the operating system with a Span option, and it is the reason dual monitor wallpaper files exist at sizes like 3840 x 1080.
Two displays, two wallpapers, and the sizes that follow
Two displays on a Mac take two files, not one wide one, because macOS sets wallpaper per display. Each panel gets the file that matches its own native pixel count. On Windows the answer is the opposite: one picture spans both, so two 1920 x 1080 panels side by side need a single file at 3840 x 1080, and two 2560 x 1440 panels need 5120 x 1440. If you have been given a wide dual monitor file and you are on a Mac, cut it in two.
For external displays the common targets are ordinary monitor resolutions, and a display advertised as 4K is almost always 3840 x 2160 rather than the cinema standard 4096 x 2160.
What free means when the wallpaper is anime art
Free to download is not a license, and on a site about anime wallpaper that distinction is the whole subject. Finding the picture is the easy part. Four categories of image are genuinely free to put on your desktop: work the rights holder released with stated terms, work under an open license, work licensed from the artist, and work you made yourself. Everything else is somebody's drawing, whether or not a server will hand you a copy of it.
Studio Ghibli published a large set of stills on ghibli.jp from September 2020, free to use within the bounds of common sense, which is a rare and unusually plain example of a rights holder saying yes. Read the license on anything else: a Creative Commons BY license needs credit, NC forbids commercial use, and ND forbids derivatives, which matters here because cropping a picture to 2560 x 1664 is a derivative. This site holds no image files and offers no downloads. It tells you what your screen needs and where a picture you are allowed to use comes from.
